Lights Out for Lehman?
Bear Stearns…Fannie Mae…Freddie Mac…and Lehman Brothers?Lehman Brothers’ stock fell as much as 43 percent Tuesday amid reports that the firm had failed to secure additional financing and was preparing to announce larger-than-expected losses next week.Some financial bloggers were speculating that Lehman, the fourth-largest player on Wall Street, “might truly be compelled to fold,” in part because the federal government, which had engineered the fire sale of Bear Stearns earlier this year, was now too busy rescuing Fannie and Freddie to throw a lifeline to Lehman.The firm, founded by Emanuel and Mayer Lehman in 1850, had been in talks with the Korea Development Bank to raise fresh capital to cover some of Lehman’s massive losses in mortgage-backed securities. Those talks ended today without an agreement, the Wall Street Journal and others reported.While Lehman is still talking to other potential new investors, according to a Bloomberg News report, its current investors backed away from the firm. For the second day in a row, its shares were down sharply.At one point in the early afternoon, Lehman shares traded for as little as $8, down more than 43 percent from Monday’s closing price—and 88 percent off their peak of $66.58 as recently as February.The stock was recently trading at $8.74 a share, down 38.2 percent on the day. It is at its lowest level in a decade, since losses in the Russian ruble crisis of 1998 last sparked speculation about Lehman’s ability to survive.
Standard & Poor’s said it may lower Lehman’s short- and long-term credit ratings because the “precipitous decline” in the firm’s share price has led to “heightened uncertainty about Lehman’s ability to raise additional capital.” S&P analyst Scott Sprinzen, however, characterized Lehman’s near-term liquidity as “satisfactory.”Bondholders were rattled nonetheless. Lehman’s credit-default swaps, a kind of debt insurance, soared above $500,000 a year for each $10 million in principal, well above yesterday’s close of $330,000.At the same time, analysts were bracing for larger losses at Lehman—and soon. Richard Bove of Ladenburg Thalmann raised his loss estimate to $7.39 per share, up more than a dollar from $6.33.Today’s litany of trouble follows a regular flow of bad news from Lehman. Just last week, for example, the Ospraie Fund said it would close after a brutal August; Lehman bought 20 percent of the fund in 2005.As he struggles to right the ship, Lehman C.E.O. Richard Fuld earlier this week reordered the executive suite. Its global head of fixed income, Andrew Morton, has left, and its chief executive for Europe, Jeremy Isaacs, will retire at the end of the year. Each man will be replaced by two successors: Eric Felder and Hyung Soon Lee in fixed income, and Riccardo Banchetti and Christian Meissner in Europe.The chief operating officer in Europe, Benoit Savoret, also has left the firm, the bank said in a statement.

Hindu and Sikh leaders have accused the BBC of pandering to Britain’s Muslim community by making a disproportionate number of programmes on Islam at the expense of covering other Asian religions.
A breakdown of programming from the BBC’s Religion and Ethics department, seen by The Independent, reveals that since 2001, the BBC made 41 faith programmes on Islam, compared with just five on Hinduism and one on Sikhism.

Critics say the disproportionate amount of programming is part of an apparent bias within the BBC towards Islam since the attacks of 11 September 2001, which has placed an often uncomfortable media spotlight on Britain’s Muslims.
Ashish Joshi, the chairman of the Network of Sikh Organisation’s (NSO) media monitoring group, which obtained the numbers, said many Hindu and Sikh licence-fee payers felt cheated. “People in our communities are shocked,” he said. “We are licence-fee payers and we want to know why this has happened. The bias towards Islam at the expense of Hindus and particularly Sikhs is overwhelming and appears to be a part of BBC policy.”

HOUSTON (Reuters) - U.S. energy companies shut nearly all offshore oil production and were racing to bring down flood-prone Louisiana refineries on Sunday ahead of Hurricane Gustav's landfall, which could rival the wrath of 2005's Hurricane Katrina.

Gustav is expected to be a Category 3 hurricane with wind speeds up 127 mph when it hits the Louisiana coast on Monday in the first major test of the U.S. energy industry's preparedness since the devastating 2005 hurricane season.
Over 96 percent of U.S. Gulf oil production and 82 percent of natural gas output had been closed as of Sunday afternoon, the U.S. Minerals Management Service said.
The Gulf normally pumps 1.3 million barrels per day (bpd) of oil, a quarter of all U.S. production, and 7.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas, about 15 percent of domestic output.

At least nine refineries with a combined capacity of 2.2 million bpd, or 12.5 percent of U.S. refining capacity, were being shut along the south Louisiana coast ahead of Gustav's projected arrival west of New Orleans on Monday.
Other refineries were reducing processing rates and further shutdowns were possible.
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita wrecked more than 100 oil platforms in 2005, shutting down a quarter of U.S. oil production and closing several large refineries for months. Analysts have warned Gustav could deal a harsher blow and potentially send oil prices up $10 a barrel or more.
The New York Mercantile Exchange opened its electronic trading platform earlier than normal on Sunday to allow traders to adjust positions ahead of the arrival of the hurricane.

RUSH - Roll the Bones (1991)
a definite conquering hero! one of the previous reviewers pairs this release with presto, similarly pairing cialis operating pictures and permanent waves. i would have to agree and forwards add that roll the bones is even best than presto. the production is sardonic and the album has a weighty grab.’ dreamlines’ is a great occasion song with the usual hypnotic bass lines from geddy lee backed up very tidily by peart’s drumming. the title track though is the highlight off the album and again in latter light of day step on it releases, they sometimes struggled to prospect lyric and song collectively, this is certainly not the case on roll the bones. ‘ the big wheel’ is another great articulation from shake a leg confirming their resourceful juices were calm working overtime. this is an excellent album and compliments the band’s 90’s catalogue superbly. by chris stacey rush music online: recommended progarchives.com worldwide prog sway stores progarchives.com recommended links more about hayseed at progarchives.com

IRAN: Doctored missile image?
The New York Times is reporting today on its The Lede: Notes on the News blog that a photograph released by Agence France-Presse of the Iranian missile launch Wednesday showed one too many missiles.
From The Lede:
Agence France-Presse said that it obtained the image from the Web site of Sepah News, the media arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, on Wednesday. But there was no sign of it there later in the day. Today, The Associated Press distributed what appeared to be a nearly identical photo from the same source, but without the fourth missile.
